THE SHORT ANSWER

An elopement can be just the two of you or a small celebration with your closest people. Start with a place you love and the experience you want to share. As your Costa Rica elopement photographer, we plan the photography around that place and the light, and film is available through the collection you choose.

Planning around the place and the light.

We build the photography timeline around your location and the light.

Once you have a date and setting in mind, we can help you decide when to hold the ceremony, where portraits fit, and how much time to allow between places.

Plan for changing weather with a covered option, a flexible portrait window and practical footwear. Your venue or planner can help confirm the right backup for the location.

Places to elope in Costa Rica.

Start with the setting that feels right, then compare access, travel time, privacy and the arrangements needed for a ceremony. Our Costa Rica venue guide can help you build a shortlist.

  • Guanacaste beaches. A coast with a clear dry season, December to March by IMN’s definition, with west-facing Pacific sunsets and transfers from Liberia airport (LIR). Good for a barefoot beach ceremony.
  • Santa Teresa and the Nicoya Peninsula. A laid-back surf coast with long open beaches.
  • Arenal and La Fortuna. A volcano-and-rainforest setting with waterfalls, for couples who want green over blue. IMN places Arenal in a region that is rainy through the year. Some waterfalls, protected areas and private sites require a permit or fee for ceremonies and photography, so confirm current access and event permission with the property or the relevant authority.
  • Cloud forest and the Central Valley. Misty overlooks and coffee-country light, convenient if you fly into San José (SJO).
  • Manuel Antonio and the central Pacific. Jungle meeting the sea, with rainforest right behind the beach.

What an elopement day looks like.

There is no fixed template. Your day might include getting ready, a first look, vows, portraits and a quiet dinner. We help you leave space between those moments so the photography fits the day.

A first look is optional. Some couples enjoy a private moment together before the ceremony; others prefer to meet at the aisle. We can plan portraits around either choice.

If an adventure is part of your plans, discuss the route, access and weather backup early. A walk, a waterfall visit or time on the coast should feel like part of your experience.

Symbolic and legal ceremonies.

Decide whether you want a symbolic ceremony or a legally recognized marriage, then discuss the appropriate arrangements with your planner and a qualified local officiant or legal adviser.

Requirements depend on your circumstances and where the marriage must be recognized. Confirm documents and timing with the relevant professionals before you travel. Our role is to help plan and photograph the celebration.

For reference, TSE, Costa Rica’s civil registry authority, describes one civil route at the Registro Civil. Both partners apply together. Foreign applicants present valid identification, an apostilled birth certificate and an apostilled civil status certificate, with an official translation if they are not in Spanish. Two named witnesses attend with ID, a notice is published in the official gazette at the couple’s cost, and TSE gives an average of 4 to 6 months once the application is complete and the notice is published. (TSE procedure sheet, a file dated July 2026.) This is one route, so confirm the current steps with a qualified local professional.

Your ceremony can reflect your own traditions and priorities. D and E, for example, made their Amor Arenal elopement a two-day celebration, with a first evening dancing under lights surrounded by the forest. Tell us which parts of your day matter to you.

07 / WHEN TO GO

Seasons change with the region.

Climate notes from IMN, Costa Rica’s national meteorological institute. Averages describe a typical year, not your date.

  • Guanacaste and the Nicoya peninsula.Dry season from December to March, when about 4% of the year’s rain falls. April is a transition month, the rains settle in around the last third of May, and November is a transition back toward the dry season. (IMN regional study)
  • Arenal and the north.Part of IMN’s Zona Norte, which follows the Caribbean rainfall regime: rainy all year, with a relative decrease in February, March and April. (IMN regional study)

How much does a Costa Rica elopement photographer cost?

It depends on the collection, your coverage and your location. We are happy to send the full breakdown once we know your date and where you want to elope.

Where is a good place to elope in Costa Rica?

Choose by setting and logistics: the Guanacaste coast for beach celebrations, Santa Teresa for a surf-town atmosphere, or Arenal and the cloud forest for an inland nature setting. Confirm access and travel arrangements for your exact location.

Do we have to get legally married in Costa Rica to elope here?

You can choose a symbolic celebration or explore a legal ceremony. TSE describes a civil route that averages 4 to 6 months once the application is complete, so ask a qualified local officiant or legal adviser which requirements apply to you.

How many people can come to an elopement?

An elopement can be just the two of you or a small group. There is no fixed rule; the point is an intimate day rather than a full wedding.

What is the right time of year to elope in Costa Rica?

It depends on the region. IMN puts the dry season on the Guanacaste coast from December to March, while the Arenal area is rainy through the year. Start with your preferred place and travel dates, then discuss a weather backup with your venue or planner. We can help build flexibility into the photography schedule.

Do you offer both photography and video for elopements?

Yes. We offer photography and film, with the team, coverage and deliverables specified in your selected collection.
