A Playa Langosta elopement for a vow renewal

Five years of marriage, and a day to renew it on the beach.

Sonia and Ben had been married for five years when they chose to start a new chapter of their story. They traveled to Tamarindo for a renewal of their vows and a chance to remind themselves of the bond they share.

We photographed the glances, the laughter and the warmth between them. For Sonia and Ben, it was a way of choosing each other again, with the waves for company.

Ben writing his vows

Before the ceremony, Ben wrote his vows in a quiet room, while Sonia got ready with flowers woven into her braid.

Playa Langosta, sand and rocks

The ceremony was set on the sand at Playa Langosta: a triangular wooden arch with macramé and flowers, a blanket and rattan lanterns, and the rocky shore behind. Rocks, tide pools and the open sea gave the day its setting.

Sunset on the rocks

As the sun went down, the light turned warm and low. We made portraits of Sonia and Ben among the dark rocks and tide pools, hand in hand.

What we would tell couples planning a Playa Langosta elopement

Four notes drawn from this elopement. Confirm every detail for your own date with your planner and the local authorities.

  1. Keep the setup simple and portable.

A triangular wooden arch, a blanket and a few lanterns were all this ceremony needed on the sand.

  2. Leave quiet time for vows.

Ben wrote his in a quiet room before the ceremony. Give yourselves that time, away from the schedule.

  3. Use the low evening light.

The rocks and tide pools at the end of the day gave warm, soft portraits. Ask your photographer where the light will fall on your date.

  4. Ask your planner about footing and tide before portraits on rocks.

Rocks and tide pools photograph beautifully but can be slippery, so choose footwear and timing with your planner.
