A rainforest lodge near La Fortuna

A pavilion in the jungle, with a volcano behind it.

Amor Arenal is a rainforest hotel about 7 kilometers west of downtown La Fortuna, on the road to Arenal Volcano National Park, in Alajuela Province, according to its official site. In these photographs the volcano rises behind the pavilion.

Green Wedding Shoes described the ceremony site as a scenic overlook, so the view was part of the plan.

Red, pink and orange, hung from the roof

The design team filled the thatched pavilion with woven lamps, hanging flowers, a circle of red petals ringed with candles and a long low table with cushions. Eventos One Heart handled the planning, calligraphy and paper; Diana Palomo Floral Design did the flowers; Leoni y Lolo supplied furniture rentals.

A long table and a red cake

The table ran the length of the pavilion, low to the floor, with cushions to sit on, a pink runner, candles and a canopy of flowers overhead. The cake, by José Pablo Vega, stood at the center among glassware, with a curtain of string lights behind.

Petals, rings and a pavilion full of color

The couple crossed the pavilion floor over scattered petals while guests in orange, pink and mustard dresses stood around them. We photographed the kiss, the exchange of rings and a portrait with the bouquet.

The rings are by Local Eclectic, the groom’s attire and shoes by Gerson André and the makeup by Claudia Gómez.

What we would tell couples planning an elopement near La Fortuna

Four notes drawn from this elopement.

  1. Choose the setting that does the work.

A thatched pavilion, woven lamps and hanging flowers did much of the decorating here. Start from the place, then add flowers and furniture that match it.

  2. Pick a palette and repeat it.

Reds, pinks and oranges ran from the flowers to the cake and the guests’ dresses.

  3. Keep the paperwork separate.

The legal side of eloping in Costa Rica is a separate task from the ceremony. We are photographers and do not give legal advice, so ask your officiant or planner what applies to you.

  4. Add a second place if you have time.

A waterfall is in the same area. The La Fortuna waterfall elopement we photographed shows what that day looked like.
