How to choose a wedding photographer in Costa Rica:seven things to check.

THE SHORT ANSWER
To choose a wedding photographer in Costa Rica, start with the style you want, then review full galleries from weddings like yours and talk to two or three people before you decide. Local experience matters here because venues, light and travel differ from home. Ask what each package includes in writing, and choose someone you feel at ease with, because they will be beside you through the quiet moments.
Choose a wedding photographer in Costa Rica by style first.
Every photographer has a recognizable way of working. Knowing which one you respond to narrows the search before you read a single package.
Look at natural light against posed portraits, candid moments against directed ones, and the overall look of the colors. A handful of saved images is enough to show a pattern.
Then look for photographers who work in that style. Visit their websites and read their portfolios closely: composition, storytelling, color and consistency. Look for a genuine connection between the people in the pictures and the person behind the camera.
Finally, ask to see a full gallery. A portfolio shows selected frames; a full gallery shows how a whole day was covered.
What to look at, and what to ask.
Work down the list for each photographer you are considering. The answers are easier to compare side by side.
| Check | What to look at | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Natural light, posed portraits, candid moments, color and overall look. Collect a few images you like and notice what they share. | How would you describe your style, and how do you work during the ceremony and portraits? |
| Portfolio | Composition, storytelling, use of color and consistency. Look for a genuine connection between the couple and the photographer in the moments shown. | Can we see a full gallery from a wedding like ours, not only highlights? |
| Reviews | What past couples say about communication, punctuality, flexibility and how at ease they felt. | Where can we read reviews from couples you have worked with? |
| Meeting | An in-person or video call. Whether they listen to your plans, places and the moments you care about. | What would you plan for our venue, our light and our timeline? |
| Local experience | Familiarity with Costa Rican venues, lighting and local customs. Examples from weddings here. | What is your experience at weddings in Costa Rica, and in settings like ours? |
| Packages | What each package includes: pre-wedding session, post-processing, number of edited photos, delivery method and any extras. | What exactly is covered, what costs extra, and can we have it in writing? |
| Instinct | How comfortable you feel with them. Rapport and trust show in how they communicate before the day. | Would we be glad to have this person beside us during the quiet moments? |
These checks come from our experience, not from a study. Use the ones that matter to you.
Extra questions
for a wedding here.
For couples flying in, or planning from another time zone.
What is the plan if it rains?
Weather changes by region and season. Ask the photographer and the venue where the ceremony would move and how flexible the portrait window is. Our guide to the months to get married in Costa Rica covers the seasons.
Have they worked at your venue or area?
Someone who knows the venue knows where the light falls at your ceremony time and what the space allows. Ask for examples from similar settings.
What happens if equipment fails?
A professional carries backups. Ask what they bring and what the contract says.
Do you want photo and film from one team?
If you want both, ask whether the two plans are coordinated and what each collection includes. We offer both, with coverage and deliverables set by the collection you choose.
Can you plan in your language?
You can plan with us in English or Spanish. Whoever you choose, confirm you can talk through details comfortably before the day.

Choosing a photographer for a Costa Rica wedding?
Short answers from our own experience.
When should we contact photographers?
As soon as you have a date and a place. Ask each one about availability for that date, since another couple may already hold it.
Do we need a photographer who knows Costa Rica?
It is not a rule, but it helps. Venues, light and travel here differ from home, so ask for examples from weddings in Costa Rica and in settings like yours.
Should we meet before booking?
Yes, in person or on a video call. Use it to talk through your plans and notice how well they listen.
What should be in writing?
The coverage, what is delivered and how, any extras, and the payment and rescheduling terms. Ask for it before you commit.
Should photo and video come from the same team?
It can make coordination simpler, because one team plans both. It is a preference, not a requirement.
What if we cannot decide between two photographers?
Go back to the full galleries and to how each one made you feel in conversation. Rapport and trust tend to decide it.
