Mary and Nick came to Costa Rica on vacation and booked a couple’s session with us. At the waterfall at Llanos del Cortés in Guanacaste, Nick turned it into a Costa Rica waterfall engagement with a surprise proposal. This is an engagement session, not a wedding: the proposal, then the portraits that followed. Below is their day, as we photographed it.

A proposal Mary did not see coming
Mary and Nick wanted a couple’s photo session while they were in Costa Rica. What Mary did not know was that Nick had a different plan. Just as we were about to start, he told Adri he was going to propose. That was about two minutes before it happened, so Adri was as surprised as Mary was.
There was no time to waste. Adri hurried to find the right spot without Mary noticing, then used a single look to tell Nick: this is the moment. He told Mary some very sweet things, got down on one knee with the waterfall behind him, and she said yes.
From a couple’s session to an engagement session
After the yes, the session was no longer only a couple’s session: it was an engagement session. It turned out to be easy. Mary and Nick were happy, relaxed and enjoying the waterfall, and they talked about the wedding and some of the details while Adri kept photographing.
We spent a good while at the water. We also used the forest part nearby, where a river runs close to the falls, and Mary and Nick even stepped into the waterfall. The falling water made a natural backdrop, and the light at this spot did a lot of the work for us.

Nick told Adri only minutes before he proposed, and she had to move fast to find the spot. If you plan a surprise, tell us ahead of time so we can scout the place, the light and where to stand.

Mary and Nick stayed on at the waterfall and talked about their wedding while we photographed. Plan some unhurried time after the proposal rather than a quick stop.
Dress for the water.
Mary and Nick stepped into the waterfall and spent time by the river. Choose clothes and shoes you are happy to get wet, and ask us about the route before you go.
