Places to propose in Costa Ricafive settings and what to check first.

THE SHORT ANSWER
The places to propose in Costa Rica that we see couples choose are the Arenal volcano area, Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, Playa Conchal and Nauyaca Waterfalls. Pick by the setting you want, then check the practical side: whether it is a protected area with tickets and rules, which season suits the region, and whether you want the moment photographed.
Places to propose in Costa Rica at a glance.
The setting comes first. The last column is what we would check before choosing a day.
| Place | Setting | Season (IMN) | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arenal volcano area | Volcano views near La Fortuna, in Alajuela province, with lookout trails in the national park. | Northern zone: one long rainy period from May to December or January. | Park hours listed as 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily; cloud can cover the summit. |
| Manuel Antonio | A national park beach on the Central Pacific coast, with capuchin monkeys, sloths and birds. | Central Pacific: dry January to March, rains from early May. | Online tickets through SINAC, ID, a weekly closing day, no parking area. |
| Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve | Mist-covered forest at about 1,600 m, with hanging bridges and the La Ventana lookout. | Not covered in the IMN studies we read; ask the reserve. | Hours listed as 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; start early for clearer views. |
| Playa Conchal | A Guanacaste beach known for crushed shells instead of fine sand. | North Pacific: dry December to March, rains from May. | Which stretch you may use and whether a nearby property sets rules. |
| Nauyaca Waterfalls | A two-tier waterfall in forest, reached on a walk in. | Not covered in the IMN studies we read; the falls change with the rain. | Access, fees, hours and swimming conditions with the operator. |
Seasons are climate averages from IMN regional studies; a single day can differ. Park details come from Visit Costa Rica and can change, so confirm on the park’s official booking page.
A volcano behind you.
The Arenal area, near La Fortuna, puts a green volcano cone behind the two of you.
Arenal Volcano National Park lists lookout trails and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to Visit Costa Rica. Clouds often sit on a volcano like this, so the summit may be hidden when you arrive. The photograph above shows cloud over the cone, and a clear view is a bonus, not a promise.
The northern zone has one long rainy period, from May to December or January, so bring a plan for showers in any month. If you are choosing a viewpoint inside the park, ask which one the park allows for a private moment. For a sense of the area, see a wedding at Arenal Volcano we photographed.
A park beach on the Pacific.
Manuel Antonio National Park sits near Quepos, in Puntarenas province, on the Central Pacific coast. Visit Costa Rica lists capuchin monkeys, sloths, coatis, iguanas and many birds, so wildlife may share the beach with you.
Because it is a national park, plan around its rules. Tickets are sold online through the SINAC booking system, you show ID with your reservation number, single-use plastics are not allowed and the park has no parking area. It closes one day a week, and the published sources we read disagree on which day, so confirm it on the official booking page. IMN describes the dry season on the Central Pacific as January to March.

Above the clouds in a forest reserve.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is in the north of Puntarenas province, about 6 km east of Santa Elena, at roughly 1,600 m above sea level. Visit Costa Rica describes dense fog, 13 km of paths, hanging bridges and the La Ventana lookout over the continental divide.
It is listed as open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the tourism board suggests starting early so the view stays clear. Mist is part of the setting, so be ready for a day that looks different from the forecast. Ask the reserve about rules for private moments and for photography before you choose a spot.
A beach of crushed shells.
Playa Conchal is a Guanacaste beach known for crushed shell fragments in place of fine sand, which gives the shoreline a pale, textured look. IMN describes the North Pacific dry season as December to March, with rains settling in from May.
Resorts and clubs sit near this stretch of coast. Before you choose a spot, ask your planner which part of the beach you can use and whether a nearby property sets its own rules for guests, hired photographers or drones.

A two-tier waterfall in the forest.
Nauyaca Waterfalls fall in two tiers through forest, with a pool at the base. Reaching them takes a walk in, so plan comfortable shoes, water and extra time, and ask the operator about hours, fees and whether the pool is safe for wading on your day. Water levels change with the rain.

Four checks that help.
General guidance, not a legal or park-authority ruling. Rules change, so confirm them with the place.
Know what kind of place it is.
A national park, a private reserve and a public beach each have different rules and hours. Find out which you are standing in.
Confirm hours, tickets and closing days.
For parks and reserves, check the official booking page close to your date, not an old blog post, including ours.
Pick the season for the region.
The Pacific coast and the northern zone do not share a dry season. See the table above, then choose the time of day: early or late light is usually softer and the place is usually quieter.
Ask about photography and drones.
Parks, reserves and some properties set their own rules for professional photography and drones. If we are photographing, we check with the place first, and you can tell us your plan before you ask.
Before you choose.
Short answers, with the source behind each one.
Do we need a permit to propose?
We did not find a rule that applies to the proposal itself. Parks, reserves and venues set rules for visitors, photography and drones, so ask the place, and mention it if a photographer will be there.
Which season suits a proposal?
It depends on the region rather than a single answer. IMN describes the North Pacific dry season as December to March and the Central Pacific dry season as January to March. The northern zone, which includes Arenal, has one long rainy period from May to December or January.
Is Manuel Antonio open every day?
No. The national park closes one day a week, and the published sources we read give different days, so check the official SINAC booking page before you choose a date.
Can you photograph a proposal?
Tell us the place, the date and a rough time window, and we will say honestly whether it works. We also photograph engagement sessions.
Should the place be private or busy?
That is your call. Parks and well-known viewpoints have other visitors, so an early or late start helps. For more privacy, ask about quiet stretches of coast or a booked slot at a venue.
