Costa Elena Costa Rica Wedding Photographer: A Regional Guide

Costa Elena is one of the quieter pockets of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It does not get the search volume that Tamarindo or Papagayo do. That is part of its appeal for couples who want a remote, photo-rich, luxury destination wedding in Costa Rica. We are Adri & Lucas, a Costa Rican husband-and-wife photo and video team based in Guanacaste, and Costa Elena is one of the regions we photograph most often.

What is Costa Elena and why is it good for weddings

Costa Elena is a quiet stretch of the northwestern Guanacaste coastline in the La Cruz canton of Costa Rica, anchored by Playa El Jobo and the JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive. It is good for weddings because it offers Pacific coastline scenery, all-inclusive resort logistics, and a calmer atmosphere than the busier Papagayo and Tamarindo wedding zones further south.

Quick answer: Costa Elena is a resort-residential community in the cantón of La Cruz, in Guanacaste province, in northwest Costa Rica, on the Pacific coast near the Nicaraguan border. Where Costa Elena is

Costa Elena is a resort-residential community in the cantón of La Cruz, in Guanacaste province, in northwest Costa Rica, on the Pacific coast near the Nicaraguan border. The flagship property is JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive, which sits directly on Playa El Jobo. The drive from Liberia / Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) is approximately 60 to 75 minutes, heading northwest.

Costa Elena is not Tamarindo. It is not Papagayo. It is its own thing: drier, quieter, more remote, and visibly closer to the dry-forest interior of Guanacaste than most other coastal communities in the country.

Why Costa Elena is different from other Guanacaste regions

Tamarindo and the surrounding beaches (Playa Grande, Avellanas, Conchal) are surf towns first, with wedding venues built into the periphery. The vibe is sandy, casual, communal.

Papagayo (the peninsula north of Liberia, anchored by Four Seasons and Andaz) is luxury-resort-first, with guarded entry, golf, and a peninsula-private feel. The vibe is exclusive, peninsula-cut-off, polished.

Costa Elena is a third option. It has the luxury infrastructure of Papagayo without the gated peninsula feel. It has the open Pacific of Tamarindo without the surf-town chaos. It has dry-forest hills behind the beach that almost nowhere else in coastal Guanacaste does. For couples who want a quiet luxury wedding with the photographic range of beach, dry forest, and ocean-view terraces, Costa Elena is the strongest answer in Guanacaste right now.

Weather and seasons in Costa Elena

Dry season: December through April. Reliably sunny. Lower humidity. Predictable booking comfort. Sunset around 5:30 PM. The first-choice wedding window.

Green season: May through November. Wetter, more dramatic, more cinematic. Afternoon rain risk that we plan around. The light in green season is some of the best we shoot all year. Sunset around 5:50 PM.

Costa Elena trends drier than Tamarindo or Papagayo because of the regional dry-forest geography. That matters in the shoulder months (April, May, October, November) when other parts of Guanacaste flip to wet season earlier.

Venue options on the Costa Elena coastline

The flagship is JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive on Playa El Jobo. The first all-inclusive JW Marriott in Latin America and the Caribbean. 415 guestrooms, 17 pools, beach ceremony space, ocean-view terraces, indoor and outdoor reception venues.

Beyond the resort, the Costa Elena coastline includes private villa estates and smaller-scale residential properties that occasionally host private events. Most couples who plan a Costa Elena wedding choose the JW for predictability and full-property infrastructure.

Photo opportunities in Costa Elena

Three things make Costa Elena distinctive for wedding photography:

The beach itself. Playa El Jobo is calm, pale, west-facing, and visually clean. It does not have the surf chop of Tamarindo or the rocky drama of some northern beaches. It is built for golden-hour ceremony work.

The dry forest. Behind Playa El Jobo, the hills carry guanacaste trees and dry-leafed canopies that turn copper from December through April. This is the most distinctive photographic asset in the region.

The biodiversity. Guanacaste’s dry forest hosts howler monkeys, scarlet macaws (occasionally, depending on season), and a range of birdlife. We do not promise these as photographic guarantees on a wedding day, but they shape the texture of every gallery we shoot here.

Where is Costa Elena Costa Rica

Costa Elena is on the northwestern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the La Cruz canton of Guanacaste province, near the Nicaraguan border. The closest international airport is Liberia, also known as Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport.

Is Costa Elena better than Papagayo for weddings

Costa Elena is the better fit for couples who want a quieter, more private wedding setting on the Pacific coast, while Peninsula Papagayo is the better fit for couples who want a wider range of luxury hotel brands and a more developed resort district.

Photographer note: Costa Elena’s combination of dry tropical forest and Pacific coastline gives wedding photographers two distinct visual environments within walking distance, which is harder to find in the more developed Guanacaste zones.

Planning note: Couples choosing Costa Elena for a destination wedding should plan extra travel time from Liberia airport for guests because the area is more remote than Papagayo or Tamarindo and has fewer transfer options.
