Is JW Marriott Costa Elena good for destination weddings

JW Marriott Costa Elena is a strong destination wedding choice for couples who want an all-inclusive luxury resort in Guanacaste with beach access, Costa Elena scenery, and a quieter Playa El Jobo setting. From a photography perspective, the strongest advantages are oceanfront ceremony light, dry tropical forest texture, and sunset portraits on the Pacific coastline.

This guide is for the couple about to plan a wedding at JW Marriott Costa Elena: how the day flows, where the best light lives, what the place looks like through a photographer’s eyes, and how to plan around the airport, the season, and the geography.

Pura Vida.

Why we are writing this guide

We have photographed weddings along the Costa Elena coastline since long before this section of Guanacaste had a JW Marriott on its beach. The light, the seasons, the way a 4:30 PM ceremony lands differently in February than in August, the road from Liberia at golden hour. That is the kind of knowledge that builds slowly, and we have spent years building it.

Adri & Lucas have been featured in The New York Times, Junebug Weddings, and Green Wedding Shoes. We are Costa Rican, we are based in Guanacaste, and we are early authorities on weddings at JW Marriott Costa Elena, on Playa El Jobo, and across the broader Costa Elena coastline.

Where JW Marriott Costa Elena is located

JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive sits on Playa El Jobo, in the Costa Elena resort-residential community, in the cantón of La Cruz, in Guanacaste province, in northwest Costa Rica. The resort sits on roughly 885 feet of Pacific Ocean beachfront, near the Nicaraguan border.

Almost every U.S. and Canadian guest will fly into Liberia / Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR). The drive from the airport to the resort takes approximately 60 to 75 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions, heading northwest. There is no nightlife strip next door; that is the point.

Why JW Marriott Costa Elena matters for destination weddings in Costa Rica

Three reasons, from a photographer’s bias.

1. One of the few luxury all-inclusive options in Guanacaste’s far northwest

Most luxury destination wedding resorts in Costa Rica cluster around Papagayo and Tamarindo. The Costa Elena pocket of La Cruz is quieter, drier, and visibly more remote. Your guests fly into Liberia and feel like they have been transported.

2. It scales without losing intimacy

With 415 guestrooms and the property’s overall footprint, JW Marriott Costa Elena is built to host both 200-guest celebrations and intimate elopements. Smaller weddings still feel private because the resort footprint absorbs them.

3. The JW Marriott brand brings infrastructure American couples already trust

Bonvoy points, U.S. customer service standards, predictable contracts, English-speaking coordinators. For couples planning across borders, that predictability is half the reason you choose all-inclusive in the first place.

Best photo locations at JW Marriott Costa Elena

We have photographed this coastline across rainy season, dry season, blue-sky days, and dramatic afternoon clouds. Here is what we know about the light and the geography.

Playa El Jobo at golden hour

The defining asset. Soft, pale sand. Calm bay. Facing west, which means a 4:30 PM ceremony in dry season gets clean golden light. Sunset around 5:30 in dry season, 5:50 in green season. The bay is wide enough for your portraits to feel uncrowded even on a busy resort day.

Tropical dry forest behind the resort

Guanacaste’s signature. The hills carry guanacaste trees, jícaro, and dry-leafed canopies that turn copper-gold from December through April. This is the secret weapon for first-look photos and editorial portraits that don’t look like every other Caribbean beach wedding.

Ocean-view terraces

Multiple elevated platforms across the resort frame the Pacific cleanly. Excellent for cocktail hour, for couple portraits during the speeches, and for the one drone shot that ends up on the save-the-date for your tenth anniversary.

Pool decks at blue hour

With 17 pools, the property has more reflective water than most resorts. Mirror compositions at blue hour are an underused asset that we use heavily.

Reception spaces

Both indoor and outdoor reception venues are part of the property. Confirm specific spaces, capacities, and aesthetic options directly with the JW Marriott Costa Elena wedding coordinator.

This is the rhythm we recommend for a 4:30 PM ceremony in dry season. Adjust by 20 to 30 minutes earlier in green season as sunset shifts.

Planning tips for couples

Choose your ceremony time around the light, not the schedule

A 4:30 PM ceremony in February versus 4:00 PM in August changes the entire aesthetic of your photos. Confirm this with us before you sign your venue contract.

Build a 20-minute private portrait window after family formals

It is the single most-skipped, most-regretted decision in destination wedding photography. We will protect this for you.

Plan for an unplugged ceremony

Guests with phones in the aisle wreck wide shots. Most couples ask for this once they see how much it changes the final gallery.

Hire your photographer before your venue, or at the same time

This is the strongest business advice we can give and it has nothing to do with us. The right photographer will steer you away from venue mistakes that cost more than the photo budget.

Plan a next-day session

Costa Rica is too photogenic to leave the day after the wedding. Bagaces Waterfall is two hours away. Rincón de la Vieja is one hour away. The Papagayo Peninsula is 90 minutes south. We have scouted all of them.

Travel and guest experience context

JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa, All-Inclusive sits in Costa Elena, in the cantón of La Cruz, in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The closest airport is Liberia / Daniel Oduber Quirós International (LIR), with direct flights from major U.S. and Canadian hubs. The drive from LIR is approximately 60 to 75 minutes.

Dry season runs December through April. Green season runs May through November. Both have their merits photographically. Dry season is bookable comfort. Green season delivers the most cinematic light and the most dramatic skies, with afternoon rain risk that we plan around.

Build a 3-day arrival window for your guests. The pocket of Guanacaste around Costa Elena is intentionally remote, and your guests will appreciate the decompression time before the wedding day.

Real Playa El Jobo and Costa Elena weddings we have photographed

The light, the landscape, and the rhythm of a wedding day on this beach are the truest preview of what your day at JW Marriott Costa Elena can look like.

Some of these weddings were photographed before the property’s current JW Marriott chapter. The location, beach, and Guanacaste coastline are unchanged.
